Building a fantasy landscape from the past in the now

My works have developed from the endless possibilities of landscapes. I perceive visual memories and objects from my childhood to create images and forms in fantasy landscapes, which enquire with the very identity of self. For me, it is very difficult to live in the hard socio-political structure I have experienced. The past is crucial to shaping human character and life, and reactions to it place the human in a landscape of the present. Continuous engagement with my artwork always helps me emerge from painful nostalgia and generates possibilities of new questions and communication with the now. My compositions are not pre-planned — they start from spaces provided by coffee wash and images and notions created fluently, using the material quality of charcoal. Their freedom lies in the middle path.
