A fundamental question every creative person faces — where does an artist get inspiration from? In my case, the primary influence has been the environment I live in. My psyche is like a sponge that absorbs everything happening around me and distils all that information into my art. Although I no longer live in Mumbai, till about four years ago, I was very much a big city girl at heart. Trapped in the exhausting, dizzying spiral of living in a sleepless city, my art reflected the ceaseless chaos, confusion and fragmentation associated with a noisy, crowded metropolis. Forms, details, colors and textures fought with each other, each seeking domination on canvas. The net effect worked, drawing praise and appreciation from many. But strangely, my own work left me dissatisfied. I was still seeking something my art couldn’t find. It was only when I escaped the disorienting chaos of Mumbai and its brilliant, often blinding neon lights that I slowly began to understand what was missing — my ‘soul’. Hypnotized by the glitz, glamour of a fast-paced life, I had lost sight of my essence in the stifling environs of a concrete jungle. In my artistic journey, I have now emerged from that mindless milieu of people who barely have time to communicate with each other, leave alone communing with oneself.
